Memorize: Luke 16:13 NKJV “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Recommended Reading: Mark 10:20-25, Luke 16:1-18

Luke 16:13 – EASY – A slave cannot work for two masters at the same time. Maybe he will hate one of the masters, but he will love the other one. Or he will work well for one master, but he will think bad things about the other one. God and money are like different masters. You cannot work for both of them.’

Luke 16:13 – ‭NLT‬‬ – ‭‭“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

Luke 16:13 – AMP – No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand devotedly by the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon [that is, your earthly possessions or anything else you trust in and rely on instead of God].”

Luke 16:13 – TPT – It is impossible for a person to serve two masters at the same time. You will be forced to love one and reject the other. One master will be despised and the other will have your loyal devotion. Your choice between God and the wealth of this world    is no different. You must enthusiastically love one and definitively reject the other.”

Luke 16:13 in Yoruba

Luku 16:13 YCB

[13]  “Kò sì í ẹnìkan tí ó lè sin ọ̀gá méjì. Òun yóò yà kórìíra ọ̀kan tí yóò fẹ́ràn èkejì, tàbí kí ó fi ara mọ́ ọ̀kan kí ó sì yan èkejì ní ìpọ̀sí. Ẹ̀yin kò lè sin Ọlọ́run àti owó papọ̀.”

Key: To be wealthy is a good thing; for money answers everything, according Ecclesiastes 10:19. However, the unbridled desire to pursue and keep hold of wealth at the expense of everything the Kingdom of God is woeful. Money becomes the root of evil in the hands of the one who are enslaved by it; those who can no longer sustain their relationship because of it.

There are people who confess their love for God in worship but when it comes to wealth to God, they show where their heart truly belongs; they hold tight to their money.

In Mark 10:20-25, we can see the story of a man who told Jesus he has obeyed all commandments. When Jesus told him to sell his possessions, give the money to the poor  then come follow him, he fell on his face and went away; he is a slave to his wealth.

We must know that the wealth we have was given to us by God in the first place. So, we must not let it take the place of God in our lives. Therefore we must not trust in riches but in God; it comes from God anyway. And we must be ready to give, willing to share.

I Timothy 6:17-18 NKJV Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. [18] Let  them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share,

Prayer: Father, do not allow me to be a slave to money.
