The Light Daily Devotional – Draw near to God

Focus: Draw near to God

The word for today

When the Holy Spirit finds expression in the life of a person, their ultimate delight will be to draw even nearer to God. The desire and thirst to have more of God in our lives and to detest anything that breaks our communion with Him indicates that we still belong to Him!

Scriptural Reference:

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:8 NKJV)

The ultimate goal of every man’s life journey should be to return to and draw nearer to God. We are all just pilgrims in this world temporarily, and our final destination is to be with God. Hence, God desires an intimate relationship with us where we are conscious of Him and seek to do His will in everything. This requires maintaining a pure heart and cleansing ourselves of sin.

In the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912, amidst the chaos and struggle for survival as the ship plunged into the icy waters, a particular group of individuals chose not to succumb to panic. Instead, the defiant sang the song “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” This act reflected their profound resilience, viewing the dire circumstances as an opportunity to prepare to meet God in eternity.

We should not allow the pursuits and distractions of this world to take us away from our relationship with God. No matter what we achieve in life, our lives will ultimately come to an end and we will have to stand before God.

With this in mind, it is prudent to focus on drawing near to God while we can through regular prayer, Bible study and living according to His word. We do not know when our time on earth will end. Being close to God should be our top priority over worldly goals. As we journey through life, we must continually turn back to God to strengthen our spiritual connection with Him. Our lives will only be truly successful if we use this time on earth to prepare for eternity with God.

Do you have a relationship with God?

Dear God, help me prioritise drawing nearer to You as the ultimate purpose of my existence in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Emphasis: Make drawing nearer to God the purpose of existence rather than getting distracted by the temporary things of this world. The ultimate destination is eternity with Him.

Have a Blessed Wednesday!
