Focus: What a Good Man Does

WORD FOR TODAY

A good man’s life is measured not just by what he achieves in his lifetime but by the legacy he leaves behind. True success under God is incomplete until you leave an inheritance—not just of wealth, but of faith, purpose, and values—for generations to come.

Scriptural Reference

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” — Proverbs 13:22 (NKJV)

The hallmark of a mature and successful life is the ability to think beyond oneself and make decisions that bless those who come after. A man’s true greatness is revealed when he begins to live for something greater than his personal ambitions—when his focus shifts to what he can pass on to others.

David serves as a timeless example of this principle. Before his death, David prepared Solomon not only with material resources but also with spiritual, moral, and practical guidance to ensure his success. He gave Solomon this powerful instruction:

“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.” — 1 Chronicles 28:9 (NKJV)

David’s preparation for Solomon wasn’t limited to wealth or possessions. He passed on his faith, his understanding of God’s covenant, and a vision for Solomon’s purpose as king. He built a foundation that Solomon could build upon—a legacy that extended beyond his lifetime.

This is the essence of what it means to leave an inheritance. It’s not just about money or material possessions; it’s about your name, your values, your faith, and the purpose God has entrusted to you. A good man ensures that his children can carry on his legacy of righteousness, purpose, and excellence.

Sadly, the story of Eli’s family reminds us of the consequences when this principle is neglected. Eli’s sons failed to uphold the spiritual heritage of their father, leading to the downfall of their legacy. This highlights an important truth: inheritance is not just about what you leave for your children but what you leave in them.

Meditation: What kind of legacy are you building today? Are you preparing your children, family, or those around you to succeed spiritually, morally, and in their God-given purpose?

Prayer: Lord, help me to live beyond myself. Teach me to sow seeds of faith, wisdom, and purpose into the lives of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Emphasis: A good man’s worth is not in what he acquires, but in what he leaves behind

True success is measured by a legacy that outlives you and reflects the values of God’s kingdom.
