Focus: The Evidence of Spiritual Growth
WORD FOR TODAY
Spiritual growth is not measured merely by how much we know, how long we have been Christians, or how religious we appear. The clearest evidence of genuine growth is a life that increasingly departs from sin and conforms to God’s unchanging standard!
Scriptural Reference
“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.'” — 2 Timothy 2:19 (NKJV)
God has a standard, and His standard cannot be negotiated according to culture, personality, popularity, or human opinion. He does not adjust righteousness to accommodate our preferences. His desire is that those who belong to Him should increasingly reflect His character.
There is an identity that goes deeper than our appearance, name, language, background, profession, or social circle. It is the identity of belonging to God. And one of the marks of those who belong to Him is a growing separation from iniquity.
Every human being is born with a sinful nature, and the works of the flesh can easily find expression when they are not resisted and surrendered to God. Spiritual growth, therefore, involves more than receiving forgiveness; it involves allowing the Holy Spirit to transform our desires, attitudes, words, and actions.
A person cannot continually embrace sin and claim that nothing needs to change. Grace does not give us permission to remain in what Christ came to deliver us from. The more we walk with God, the more sensitive we should become to what displeases Him. We may stumble, but we must not make peace with sin.
Joseph demonstrated this when he refused to compromise with temptation, saying, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). His awareness of God shaped his decision.
If you desire freedom and maturity in Christ, make departure from iniquity part of your spiritual journey. Let God’s Word correct you, let the Holy Spirit transform you, and let your life increasingly demonstrate that you belong to Him.
Question for Meditation: Is my life increasingly moving away from sin and closer to God’s standard?
Prayer: Lord, search my heart and reveal every area where sin still finds expression. Give me grace to depart from iniquity, walk in holiness, and allow Your Spirit to transform my life daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
