1 John 4:1 – NLT – Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

1 John 4:1 – EASY – My friends, do not believe everyone who says that they speak God’s message. There are many false prophets who are travelling around everywhere. They say that they have a message from God’s Spirit, but the message comes from a false spirit. So check each message carefully to see if it is really from God.

Key: We live in a time when the number of prophets who are not led by the Spirit of God is increasing. Therefore, as believers, we must remain vigilant so that we do not fall into their deception.

Apostle John instructs us to test every spirit to determine whether it is from God. Through the help of the Holy Spirit, we can discern by examining the character, fruit, and track record of anyone who comes to us in the name of the Lord. In addition, there will often be an inner witness from the Holy Spirit, as Scripture says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit” (Romans 8:16).

Above all, always return to God for confirmation. If God has spoken to you and someone brings a message that contradicts what He has already told you, seek God again rather than blindly accepting the person’s words. Do not be like the young prophet who chose to listen to the old prophet instead of obeying the instruction God had given him. His disobedience led to his death, as he was killed by a lion.

Prayer: HolySpirit, help me not fall in the hands of false prophets; give me the spirit of discernment.
